Mario Sica

Robert Baden-Powell, during his career as a commander and instructor, had the opportunity to interact with many young people, observing how they particularly benefited from outdoor activities. In 1907, he organized the first experimental scout camp on Brownsea Island, drawing important pedagogical insights from it. During his career as a general and instructor, Robert Baden-Powell worked with many young people and observed how much they benefited, during their growth, from outdoor activities and exploration. These experiences gave him some new educational ideas that, in 1907, brought him to organize the first experimental Scout Camp on Brownsea Island.

Today, a group of young people camping on an island would not be something unusual. One hundred years ago, however, it was something completely new: a real educational experiment. The book tells, in a simple and essential way, the origins of Scouting: the first camp, the first four patrols and the experiences that led to the ideas behind the Scout Method. Only two years later after that camp, eleven thousand young people took part in the first major national jamboree: what had started as a small experiment on the southern coast of England would become the beginning of a Movement that would spread all over the world.
